FDA Detains Imports of Farm-Raised Chinese Seafood
Products Have Repeatedly Contained Potentially Harmful Residues
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced a broader import control of all farm-raised catfish, basa, shrimp, dace (related to carp), and eel from China. FDA will start to detain these products at the border until the shipments are proven to be free of residues from drugs that are not approved in the United States for use in farm-raised aquatic animals.
This action by FDA, a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will protect American consumers from unsafe residues that have been detected in these products. There have been no reports of illnesses to date.
“We’re taking this strong step because of current and continuing evidence that certain Chinese aquaculture products imported into the United States contain illegal substances that are not permitted in seafood sold in the United States,” said Dr. David Acheson, FDA’s assistant commissioner for food protection. “We will accept entries of these products from Chinese firms that demonstrate compliance with our requirements and safety standards.”
During targeted sampling from October 2006 through May 2007, FDA repeatedly found that farm-raised seafood imported from China were contaminated with antimicrobial agents that are not approved for this use in the United States.
The contaminants were the antimicrobials nitrofuran, malachite green, gentian violet, and fluoroquinolone. Nitrofuran, malachite green, and gentian violet have been shown to be carcinogenic with long-term exposure in lab animals. The use of fluoroquinolones in food animals may increase antibiotic resistance to this critically important class of antibiotics.
None of these substances is approved for use in farm-raised seafood in the United States, and the use of nitrofurans and malachite green in aquaculture is also prohibited by Chinese authorities. Chinese officials have acknowledged that fluoroquinolones are used in Chinese aquaculture and are permitted for use in China.
The levels of the drug residues that have been found in seafood are very low, most often at or near the minimum level of detection. FDA is not seeking recall of products already in U.S. commerce and is not advising consumers to destroy or return imported farm-raised seafood they may already have in their homes. FDA is concerned about long term exposure as well as the possible development of antibiotic resistance.
The FDA action includes conditions under which an exporter can be exempted from FDA’s detention action by providing specified information to the agency. This information must demonstrate the exporter has implemented steps to ensure its products do not contain these substances and that preventive controls are in place. The additional import controls placed on seafood from China will last as long as needed.
FDA may allow the entry into the United States and subsequent distribution into the marketplace of individual shipments of the Chinese farm-raised seafood products if the company provides documentation to confirm the products are free of residues of these drugs.

FDA Warns Consumers Not to Eat Veggie Booty Snack Food

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to eat Veggie Booty snack food, marketed by Robert's American Gourmet, due to possible contamination with Salmonella Wandsworth bacteria that cause gastrointestinal illness.
FDA advises consumers to throw away any Robert's American Gourmet brand Veggie Booty they have in their home. Veggie Booty is sold in a flexible plastic foil bag in four ounce, one ounce, and one-half ounce packages.
Veggie Booty is often consumed by children, so parents are encouraged to watch their children, and seek medical care if they observe signs of illness.
Individuals who have recently eaten Veggie Booty and who have experienced any of the symptoms described below should contact a doctor or other health care provider immediately. Any such illnesses in persons with a recent history of eating Veggie Booty should be reported to state or local health authorities.
This warning is based on 52 reports of illness across 17 states, beginning in March 2007. Almost all the illnesses have occurred in children under 10 years old, with the most cases in toddlers. Most persons had reported bloody diarrhea; four were hospitalized. FDA learned of the illnesses on June 27 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which conducted an investigation of the illnesses with state and local health officials. The outbreak is considered likely to be ongoing.
Salmonella typically causes diarrhea (may be bloody); the diarrhea is often accompanied by abdominal cramps and fever. Symptoms typically begin within one to four days after exposure to the bacteria. In infants, persons with poor underlying health and those with weakened immune systems, Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections.
States reporting illnesses include: California (seven cases), Colorado (five cases), Connecticut (one case), Georgia (one case), Indiana (one case), Massachusetts (three cases), Minnesota (two cases), New Hampshire (two cases), New Jersey (two cases), New York (13 cases), Oregon (one case), Pennsylvania (three cases), Tennessee (one), Texas (one), Vermont (three cases), Washington (four cases), and Wisconsin (two cases).

consumer reported cutting her lip.
Description: The recall includes Algoma hammock stands model numbers
6250, 6250BH, and 6290W88B. They were sold with a cotton rope hammock
with wood spreader bars and attached chains. The frame is made of steel
and has five separate tubular pieces, including two foot brackets. The
model number is located at the top of the instruction sheet that was
provided with the hammock stand.
Sold at: Kohl's, D.S.I./Supervalu, Fingerhut, Mills Fleet Farm, Shopko
Stores, Inc. and Target.com from December 2006 through May 2007 for

6/29/07 Fire Hazard with Thermador(r) Built-In Ovens Leads to Recall by BSH Home Appliances Corp.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in
cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary
recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Thermador(r) Brand Built-In Ovens
Units: About 42,000
Manufacturer: BSH Home Appliances Corp., of Huntington Beach, Calif.
Hazard: The oven can have gaps in the insulation where overheating can
occur and when used in the self-cleaning mode it can cause nearby
cabinets to overheat. This can pose a fire hazard to consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: BSH Home Appliances has received ten reports of
incidents including one which resulted in a fire that caused extensive
property damage. No injuries have been reported.
Description: This recall involves Thermador(r) Brand built-in single
ovens and combination models which have a conventional oven and a
microwave. The model numbers of the single ovens are C271B, C301B,
SEC271B and SEC301B. The model numbers of the combination models are
SEM272B, SEM302B, SEMW272B and SEMW302B. The ovens have date codes
between FD8403 and FD8701. The model number and date code can be found
on the underside of the control panel.
Sold at: Appliance and specialty stores nationwide from November 2004
through May 2007 for between $2,400 and $3,900.

6/27/07 CPSC Warns of Deadly Dangers When Consumers Use Illegal Fireworks
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Between 2000 and 2006, the U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission (CPSC) has reports of 49 fireworks-related consumer
deaths, the CPSC announced today on the Washington Mall, joined by the
U.S. Fire Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms,
and Explosives (ATF). More than half of these incidents involved illegal
fireworks.
"While many Americans will enjoy the safe and legal use of fireworks,"
said Acting CPSC Chairman Nancy Nord, "there will be those who will be
treated in hospital emergency rooms as a result of using illegal
fireworks, misusing fireworks, or due to a firework that has
malfunctioned."
On average there are about seven firework-related deaths each year. The
CPSC is aware of 11 deaths associated with fireworks in 2006.
CPSC's staff estimates that there were 9,200 emergency room-treated
injuries associated with all fireworks in 2006. Most of these injuries,
6,400, occurred during the one month period surrounding the July 4th
holiday.
For those consumers who choose to use fireworks, CPSC encourages them to
do so safely and legally. The federal government is committed to
stopping the manufacture and sale of illegal fireworks and the diversion
of professional fireworks to consumers. These explosives can be deadly
if used by consumers.
As a part of its fireworks enforcement program, CPSC actively works with
ATF. Through undercover buys, online purchases, inspections and
investigations, CPSC and ATF are tracking down and closing illegal
roadside stands, warehouses and retail stores that sell professional
grade explosives to consumers, and manufacturers of dangerous fireworks
devices. CPSC also works with the U.S. Fire Administration to reduce
deaths and injuries from fire-related hazards, including fireworks.
Since 1988, CPSC and Customs and Border Protection have seized or
detained more than 462 million hazardous fireworks at docks across the
country. The investigative work conducted by CPSC and ATF has led to
dozens of successful prosecutions by the Justice Department's Office of
Consumer Litigation and U.S. Attorney's offices across the country.
CPSC recommends following these fireworks safety tips:
* Never allow young children to play with fireworks.
* Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using
them.
Avoid buying fireworks that come in brown paper packaging, as this is
often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional shows and
could pose a danger to consumers.
* Adults should always supervise fireworks activities. Parents often
don't realize that sparklers have caused more injuries to children under
age five than any other type of firework. Sparklers burn at temperatures
of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.
* Never have any portion of your body directly over a firework device
when lighting the fuse. Move back a safe distance immediately after
lighting.
* Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not fully
functioned.
* Douse and soak with water and throw them away.
* Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
* Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other
mishap.
* Light one item at a time, then move back quickly.
* Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass
containers.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A good night's sleep - that's what most consumers
want from their mattress. Starting July 1, 2007, new mattresses will
offer an additional, lifesaving benefit: better protection from a fire
(transcript).
Mattresses manufactured in or imported into the United States on or
after July 1, 2007 must meet the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission's (CPSC) flammability standard. The mandatory standard is
designed to reduce the severity of mattress fires ignited by open flame
sources such as candles, matches and lighters.
CPSC estimates that, once fully effective, the new federal flammability
standard will prevent as many as 270 deaths and 1,330 injuries every
year.
CPSC Acting Chairman Nancy Nord calls the new standard an important
layer of fire protection in the home.
"The new federal flammability standard limits the spread and intensity
of a mattress fire," said CPSC Acting Chairman Nancy Nord. "That will
give consumers valuable time to escape their homes if there's a fire and
it will save lives."
The mandatory mattress rule, known as 16 CFR Part 1633, is a performance
standard that limits the heat release in a mattress fire.
When shopping for a new mattress or mattress set, consumers should look
for a label on the mattress stating that it meets the federal
flammability requirement, and whether it is intended to be sold alone or
with a specific foundation, such as a box spring.
Although this is an added layer of protection, consumers still need to
keep in mind that increased fire resistance does not mean there is no
fire risk. CPSC urges consumers to follow these important fire safety
tips:
* Never smoke in bed.
* Do not allow kids to play with candles, lighters, matches or smoking
materials.

Units: About 4,000
Distributor: Jakes Fireworks Inc., of Pittsburg, Kas.
Hazard: The tubes on these fireworks devices could become loose, making
the devices unstable during use. If the device tips over during use, it
could pose burn and injury hazards to bystanders.
Incidents/Injuries: None reported.
Description: The recalled fireworks are a 500 gram mine/shell device
that consists of nine, 3-inch tubes with a single fuse for ignition. The
device measures 16"x16"x13" and its packaging is a dark blue cardboard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in
cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary
recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Gateway Lithium Ion Battery Packs
Units: About 14,000
Battery Distributor: Gateway Inc., of Irvine, Calif.
Hazard: These lithium-ion battery packs can overheat, which could pose a
fire hazard to consumers. This is not an internal battery cell defect.
Incidents/Injuries: Gateway has received four reports of battery packs
overheating, including minor property damage. No injuries have been
reported.
Description: The recalled battery packs were shipped as the primary or
spare battery pack for some Gateway 400VTX and 450ROG series notebooks,
and are identified by part numbers: 6500760 or 6500761. The part number
and "made by SMP" are printed on a label on the underside of the battery
pack.
Sold through: Gateway's professional and direct distributors and Gateway
Country stores nationwide from May 2003 through August 2003. The
computers with these batteries sold for between $1,200 and $2,400 and
individual batteries sold for between $60 and $90.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using these recalled batteries immediately
and contact Gateway to receive a replacement battery. Consumers can
continue to use the notebook computers safely by turning the system off,
removing the battery pack, and using the AC adapter and power cord to
power the system until the replacement battery is received.

detaching. No injuries have been reported.

sizes. They are navy-colored and long-sleeved. They have a zipper-front

Simplicity Recalls Cribs Due to Fall, Entrapment and Choking Hazards
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in

recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using

Name of product: Nursery-in-a-Box Cribs
Units: About 40,000
Manufacturer: Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa.
Hazard: The assembly instructions provided with the cribs incorrectly
instruct consumers how to attach the crib's drop side. If improperly
installed, the drop side can disengage from the crib, posing fall and
entrapment hazards for the child. Additionally, the metal locking pins
on the drop side can pop off, presenting a choking hazard.
Incidents/Injuries: CPSC is aware of an incident in which the crib's
drop side, which was installed upside down, fell from its upright
position and the metal locking pins became dislodged. Simplicity
received a report of wrong instructions being packaged with the crib.
Description: The recalled cribs are part of the Nursery-in-a-Box
furniture set which also includes a changing table and clothing
organizer. The cribs are cherry, white or natural in color. Only model
numbers 8910 and 8050 with serial numbers 3005 HY through 0806 HY are
included in this recall. The model and serial numbers are printed on an
envelope permanently attached to the mattress support. "Simplicity,"
model and serial numbers are also printed on a label on the bottom rail
of the headboard.
Sold at: Department stores and children's product stores from August
2005 through May 2007 for about $200.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately check the crib to make sure the
drop side is securely fastened and correctly installed. Contact
Simplicity to receive correct assembly instructions, or consumers can

Cannondale Recalls Bicycles With Carbon Crankset Due to Fall Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in
cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary
recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of product: Bicycles with Carbon Cranksets
Units: About 2,900
Importer: Cannondale Bicycle Corp., of Bethel, Conn.
Hazard: The bicycle's crankset could break, posing a fall hazard to
user.
Incidents/Injuries: Cannondale has received two reports of the cranksets
breaking resulting in one minor injury.
Description: Cranksets are the gears at the front of the bicycle chain
with pedals attached to the outer ends. The crankset spins on a bearing
and axle assembly called a bottom bracket. The recalled cranksets are
two piece carbon crankset with an integrated aluminum bottom bracket.

Simplicity Recalls Cribs Due to Fall, Entrapment and Choking Hazards
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in
cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary
recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of product: Nursery-in-a-Box Cribs
Units: About 40,000
Manufacturer: Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa.
Hazard: The assembly instructions provided with the cribs incorrectly
instruct consumers how to attach the crib's drop side. If improperly
installed, the drop side can disengage from the crib, posing fall and
entrapment hazards for the child. Additionally, the metal locking pins
on the drop side can pop off, presenting a choking hazard.
Incidents/Injuries: CPSC is aware of an incident in which the crib's
drop side, which was installed upside down, fell from its upright
position and the metal locking pins became dislodged. Simplicity
received a report of wrong instructions being packaged with the crib.
Description: The recalled cribs are part of the Nursery-in-a-Box
furniture set which also includes a changing table and clothing
organizer. The cribs are cherry, white or natural in color. Only model
numbers 8910 and 8050 with serial numbers 3005 HY through 0806 HY are
included in this recall. The model and serial numbers are printed on an
envelope permanently attached to the mattress support. "Simplicity,"
model and serial numbers are also printed on a label on the bottom rail
of the headboard.
Sold at: Department stores and children's product stores from August
2005 through May 2007 for about $200.
Manufactured in: China
Remedy: Consumers should immediately check the crib to make sure the
drop side is securely fastened and correctly installed. Contact
Simplicity to receive correct assembly instructions, or consumers can
download the assembly instructions at the firm's Web site,
www.simplicityforchildren.com. Consumers can view a video on the firm's
Web site showing the proper assembly of the drop side. If the drop side
is not properly installed, consumers should stop using the crib until it
is assembled correctly.

6/5/07 CPSC Warns Meerkat 50 Youth ATVs Defective and Dangerous
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The staff of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers who own a Kazuma Meerkat 50 Youth
All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) that children are at risk of injury or death
due to multiple safety defects with this off-road vehicle. The ATVs,
which were imported by Kazuma Pacific Inc., of Stafford, Texas, were
found to have several serious defects. CPSC staff has determined that
the Meerkat 50 lacks front brakes, has no parking brake, is missing a
neutral indicator light, and can be started in gear. Additionally, the
owner's manual does not contain complete information on safe operation
and maintenance of the ATV.
CPSC staff recommends that consumers stop using the product immediately
because it is unsafe. The staff recommends that consumers demand a
refund of the purchase price from the importer or dealer due to the
defective condition of the ATV.
The risk with these ATVs is severe because these vehicles are intended
for children age 6 to 11. In many cases, youth riders are just learning
how to operate an ATV and may not have the experience necessary to help
them avoid hazards associated with this product's defects.
Kazuma Pacific has refused to provide complete incident or injury
information for any of their products. Therefore, CPSC has been unable
to determine how many children have been injured. Between December 2006
and May 2007, Kazuma Pacific has impeded CPSC's efforts to protect the
safety of children, by refusing to implement a corrective action plan
for this ATV.
Kazuma Pacific has sold at least 2,700 Meerkat 50 ATVs and has stated
that they are continuing to sell the units that CPSC staff found to be
defective. Kazuma dealers and Web retailers nationwide have sold this
ATV since 2003 for between $525 and $825.
CPSC staff is requesting that consumers immediately report any incidents

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As hurricane season blows in, consumers need to be
aware of the many dangers associated with severe weather. The U.S.
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urges consumers to protect
themselves and their families not only during, but after the storm.
In 2005, CPSC received reports of at least 64 people who died from
carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning associated with portable generators.
Portable gas generators, often used by consumers to restore power to
their homes and businesses in the aftermath of a storm, produce high
levels of odorless, poisonous CO. CPSC warns consumers that generators
should be used outdoors only, far from doors, windows, and vents that
could allow CO to come indoors.
Porter Novelli "Healthstyles" surveys (Porter Novelli's 2005 and 2006
HealthStyles mail survey was conducted among approximately 10,000 adults
age 18 and older using Synovate's Consumer Opinion Panel. Analyses were
conducted at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under a
licensing agreement with Porter Novelli) of more than 10,000 adults
found dangerous misconceptions about generator safety. The surveys found
that most respondents (62 percent) believe it is safe to run a generator
in a garage as long as the garage door is open. Many (47 percent) also
believe it is safe to run a generator in a basement as long as a window
is open. But both scenarios have caused deaths.
Even in a garage with the door open, CO can accumulate rapidly and seep
into the home, overpowering sleeping occupants. CPSC warns consumers
never to use a generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, sheds, or
similar areas, even with ventilation. CPSC estimates the amount of CO
produced by just one generator is equal to the CO produced by hundreds
of idling cars.
"Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless poison gas. It is an
invisible killer," said CPSC Acting Chairman Nancy Nord. "While
generators can come in handy after a storm, using one indoors can kill
you and your family in minutes."
Deaths associated with CO from portable generators have risen in recent
years. In 1999, generators were involved with 6% of the total yearly
estimated CO poisoning deaths associated with all consumer products
compared to 24% in 2002.
CPSC has taken major steps to alert and safeguard consumers who use
portable generators. CPSC mandated that all generators manufactured or
imported on or after May 14, 2007, bear a prominent DANGER label to warn
consumers about CO and encourage safe use.

Royal Products Recalls Pine Cone Candles Due to Fire Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in

recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using

Name of product: Vivre Royale Pine Cone Candles
Units: About 2,700
Importer: Royal Products Inc., of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Hazard: The candle's exterior coating and beads can ignite and catch
fire. The fire resulting from the coating and beads on the exterior of
the candle could ignite nearby combustibles.
Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received one report of a candle fire
causing minor property damage. CPSC has received one report of a flare
up with damage contained to the candle. No injuries have been reported.
Description: This recall involves the Vivre Royale Pine Cone Candle,
Item Number 41419. The item number is located on the packaging of the
product. The warning label on the bottom of the packaging states, "Made
in China. Royal Products Inc." The candle is shaped like a pine cone.
The candle wax is purple inside and the coating on the outside of the
candle is brown and gold. There are small clear beads all over the
outside of the candle.
Sold through: Specialty stores nationwide from October 2005 through
December 2006 for between $12 and $15.
Manufactured in: China
Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the candles and return
them to the place of purchase for an exchange or full refund.

Hazard: The assembly instructions included with the crib direct
consumers to assemble the crib with the mattress support in the highest
position and do not indicate that the mattress support can be moved to a
lower position. This poses a fall hazard to children who are able to sit
or stand up in the crib.
Incidents/Injuries: None reported.
Description: The Sleigh Round Crib, model #2005, measures approximately
42 inches in diameter, is made of solid wood and comes in a mahogany
finish. The crib has four posts that are 31 inches in height and a
portion of the side of the crib can be raised and lowered.
Sold at: Children's furniture stores nationwide from January 2005
through March 2007 for about $600.

Remedy: Consumers should move the mattress support to the lower setting
if their child is able to sit or stand up in the crib. Consumers should

Innovative Scuba Concepts Recalls Diving Regulator Components Due to
Drowning Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in

Name of product: Swivel for a Scuba Regulator
Units: About 170
Importer: Innovative Scuba Concepts Inc., of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Hazard: The swivel, which is attached to a diving regulator, could
separate while diving. This will result in a complete and sudden loss of
the diver's air supply, causing the diver to engage in emergency ascent
procedures. This poses a risk of decompression sickness due to rapid
ascent, and air embolism or drowning if the diver panics or the
emergency ascent procedure fails.
Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received one report where the swivel
separated during a dive and caused the diver to ascend using the buddy
breathing technique. No injury was reported.
Description: The recall involves the HO110 Swivels sold as an
aftermarket regulator component. There are no markings such as a date or
production code embossed on the unit. Contact Innovative Scuba Concepts
for information on where the recalled units were sold.
Sold at: Specialty retail dive stores nationwide from January 2006
through March 2007 for about $40. They also could have been installed by
a dive shop regulator technician.

Hazard: The plastic tubes used to inflate the paddle float could break
and deflate, posing a drowning hazard to consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: NRS has received five reports of paddle floats
breaking and deflating. No injuries have been reported.
Description: The NRS Sea Kayak Paddle Float is an inflatable device that
is attached to one side of the paddle to help the kayaker re-enter the
kayak in open water. The paddle float is yellow and black and measures
15" wide by 28" long, before inflation. The NRS logo is on one side.
This recall involves those paddle floats with inflation tubes that are
clear or translucent. Paddle floats with black tubes are not included.
Sold at: NRS stores nationwide and NRS catalogs from July 2006 through
March 2007 for about $40.
Manufactured in: China
Remedy: Consumers should stop using the paddle floats immediately and
contact NRS to determine if you have one of the recalled models. NRS
will provide a free replacement paddle float for consumers with recalled
units.

recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of product: Children's Metal Jewelry
Units: About 103,000
Distributor/Retailer: Tween Brands Inc., of New Albany, Ohio
Hazard: The jewelry contains high levels of lead which can cause adverse
health effects and is toxic if ingested by young children.
Incidents/Injuries: None reported.
Description: Some of the recalled necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and
charms are metallic, multi-colored, and have "High School Musical" or
pictures of "High School Musical" actors printed on them. Others have
frogs, hearts, stars, dogs with dog bones, flowers, and monkeys that
hang from silver, black or brown chains or cords.
Sold at: Limited Too and Justice retail stores nationwide, the Limited

through May 2007 for between $2 and $10.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take this recalled jewelry away

Royal Products Recalls Pine Cone Candles Due to Fire Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in
cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary
recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of product: Vivre Royale Pine Cone Candles
Units: About 2,700
Importer: Royal Products Inc., of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Hazard: The candle's exterior coating and beads can ignite and catch
fire. The fire resulting from the coating and beads on the exterior of
the candle could ignite nearby combustibles.
Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received one report of a candle fire
causing minor property damage. CPSC has received one report of a flare
up with damage contained to the candle. No injuries have been reported.
Description: This recall involves the Vivre Royale Pine Cone Candle,
Item Number 41419. The item number is located on the packaging of the
product. The warning label on the bottom of the packaging states, "Made
in China. Royal Products Inc." The candle is shaped like a pine cone.
The candle wax is purple inside and the coating on the outside of the
candle is brown and gold. There are small clear beads all over the
outside of the candle.
Sold through: Specialty stores nationwide from October 2005 through
December 2006 for between $12 and $15.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the candles and return
them to the place of purchase for an exchange or full refund.

Hazard: The assembly instructions included with the crib direct
consumers to assemble the crib with the mattress support in the highest
position and do not indicate that the mattress support can be moved to a
lower position. This poses a fall hazard to children who are able to sit
or stand up in the crib.
Incidents/Injuries: None reported.
Description: The Sleigh Round Crib, model #2005, measures approximately
42 inches in diameter, is made of solid wood and comes in a mahogany
finish. The crib has four posts that are 31 inches in height and a
portion of the side of the crib can be raised and lowered.
Sold at: Children's furniture stores nationwide from January 2005
through March 2007 for about $600.

Remedy: Consumers should move the mattress support to the lower setting
if their child is able to sit or stand up in the crib. Consumers should

Innovative Scuba Concepts Recalls Diving Regulator Components Due to
Drowning Hazard

Name of product: Swivel for a Scuba Regulator
Units: About 170
Importer: Innovative Scuba Concepts Inc., of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Hazard: The swivel, which is attached to a diving regulator, could
separate while diving. This will result in a complete and sudden loss of
the diver's air supply, causing the diver to engage in emergency ascent
procedures. This poses a risk of decompression sickness due to rapid
ascent, and air embolism or drowning if the diver panics or the
emergency ascent procedure fails.
Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received one report where the swivel
separated during a dive and caused the diver to ascend using the buddy
breathing technique. No injury was reported.
Description: The recall involves the HO110 Swivels sold as an
aftermarket regulator component. There are no markings such as a date or
production code embossed on the unit. Contact Innovative Scuba Concepts
for information on where the recalled units were sold.
Sold at: Specialty retail dive stores nationwide from January 2006
through March 2007 for about $40. They also could have been installed by
a dive shop regulator technician.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using regulators with the swivel attached

Hazard: The plastic tubes used to inflate the paddle float could break
and deflate, posing a drowning hazard to consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: NRS has received five reports of paddle floats
breaking and deflating. No injuries have been reported.
Description: The NRS Sea Kayak Paddle Float is an inflatable device that
is attached to one side of the paddle to help the kayaker re-enter the
kayak in open water. The paddle float is yellow and black and measures
15" wide by 28" long, before inflation. The NRS logo is on one side.
This recall involves those paddle floats with inflation tubes that are
clear or translucent. Paddle floats with black tubes are not included.
Sold at: NRS stores nationwide and NRS catalogs from July 2006 through
March 2007 for about $40.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the paddle floats immediately and

CPSC Warns Toddler Drownings Happen Quickly and Silently
Agency Premiers New Pool Safety Public Service Announcement
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
reports there are about 260 drowning deaths of children younger than 5
each year in swimming pools, and an estimated 2,725 children are treated
annually in hospital emergency rooms for pool submersion injuries -
mostly in residential pools. CPSC strongly advises that parents use
layers of protection around the pool to prevent their children from
becoming a drowning victim.
In conjunction with this year's drowning prevention campaign, CPSC has
produced a public service announcement (transcript) to illustrate what
happens when a toddler falls into a pool. It vividly demonstrates what
you expect to hear and what the reality often sounds like.
"Parents may think that if their child falls in the water, they will
hear lots of splashing and screaming, and that they will be able to come
to the rescue," CPSC Acting Chairman Nancy Nord said. "Many times,
however, children slip under the water silently. Even people near the
pool often report hearing nothing out of the ordinary."
To reduce the risk of drowning, CPSC recommends adopting layers of
protection, including physical barriers, such as a fence with
self-closing, self-latching gates completely surrounding pools to
prevent unsupervised access by young children. If the house forms a side
of the barrier, use alarms on doors leading to the pool area or a power
safety cover over the pool.
It is important to always be prepared for an emergency by having rescue
equipment and a phone near the pool. Also, all parents who own pools
should learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
"No one layer of protection is foolproof to prevent drowning in pools,"
said Nord. "Use as many layers of protection as possible. Multiple
barriers and constant supervision are essential to protecting children."
Last year, CPSC highlighted the growing dangers of the popular
inflatable or portable pools, which range in size from small kiddie
pools to pools up to 4-feet deep and 18-feet wide. Between 2004 and
2006, CPSC received 47 reports of deaths of children related to
inflatable pools.
Large inflatable pools are relatively inexpensive - large pools with
water filters can cost under $200. They often have slanted or flexible
sides, which make it easier for children to climb into the pool even
without a ladder present. These pools may fall outside of local building
codes that require barriers, and are often purchased by consumers
without considering the barriers, such as fencing, necessary to protect
young children.
In addition to barriers and constant supervision, CPSC offers these tips
to help prevent drowning deaths:
* Since every second counts, always look for a missing child in the pool
first. Precious time is often wasted looking for missing children
anywhere but in the pool.
* Don't leave toys and floats in the pool that can attract young
children and cause them to fall in the water when they reach for the
items.
* For above-ground and inflatable pools with ladders, remove or secure
the ladder when the pool is not in use.
* Even if children can swim, it doesn't make them drown-proof. Always
supervise children using the pool.

layers of protection around the pool to prevent their children from
becoming a drowning victim.
In conjunction with this year's drowning prevention campaign, CPSC has
produced a public service announcement (transcript) to illustrate what
happens when a toddler falls into a pool. It vividly demonstrates what
you expect to hear and what the reality often sounds like.
"Parents may think that if their child falls in the water, they will
hear lots of splashing and screaming, and that they will be able to come
to the rescue," CPSC Acting Chairman Nancy Nord said. "Many times,
however, children slip under the water silently. Even people near the
pool often report hearing nothing out of the ordinary."
To reduce the risk of drowning, CPSC recommends adopting layers of
protection, including physical barriers, such as a fence with
self-closing, self-latching gates completely surrounding pools to
prevent unsupervised access by young children. If the house forms a side
of the barrier, use alarms on doors leading to the pool area or a power
safety cover over the pool.
It is important to always be prepared for an emergency by having rescue
equipment and a phone near the pool. Also, all parents who own pools
should learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
"No one layer of protection is foolproof to prevent drowning in pools,"
said Nord. "Use as many layers of protection as possible. Multiple
barriers and constant supervision are essential to protecting children."
Last year, CPSC highlighted the growing dangers of the popular
inflatable or portable pools, which range in size from small kiddie
pools to pools up to 4-feet deep and 18-feet wide. Between 2004 and
2006, CPSC received 47 reports of deaths of children related to
inflatable pools.
Large inflatable pools are relatively inexpensive - large pools with
water filters can cost under $200. They often have slanted or flexible
sides, which make it easier for children to climb into the pool even
without a ladder present. These pools may fall outside of local building
codes that require barriers, and are often purchased by consumers
without considering the barriers, such as fencing, necessary to protect
young children.
In addition to barriers and constant supervision, CPSC offers these tips
to help prevent drowning deaths:
* Since every second counts, always look for a missing child in the pool
first. Precious time is often wasted looking for missing children
anywhere but in the pool.
* Don't leave toys and floats in the pool that can attract young
children and cause them to fall in the water when they reach for the
items.
* For above-ground and inflatable pools with ladders, remove or secure
the ladder when the pool is not in use.
* Even if children can swim, it doesn't make them drown-proof. Always
supervise children using the pool.
